Kitchenaid KDI21 - Detergent dispenser won't open

The detergent dispenser won't open when the diswasher cycles.

On two separate occasions, the door was open and some of the soap remained in the cup; another time the latch just didn't open.

Any help appreciated.

Your model dishwasher uses Detergent Cup Dispenser with Gasket and Screws,  part # 9740171

I can not tell from the photo in the parts link above or by looking at the KDI21AD Diagram if the new detergent cup dispenser also includes Bi-Metal, part # 4162568

The Bi-Metal is the part that trips the detergent cup open. It's been awhile sense I have worked on one of these older models, but I recall replacing a number of detergent cups in them for the same problems you described.

I have had good luck with adjusting the bi-metal catch on the soap cup. Remove the front panel (4screws ) POWER OFF. Then loosen the screw that holds the bi-metal in place, swing the soap cup and catch it. Move the bi-metal back until it barely catches,tighten the screw and that is it. Make sure the filter in the sump area is clear, the dishwasher soap cup works on the amp draw from the motor. If it is plugged or not enough water the cup won't open.
