I also have a Kenmore / Whirlpool direct drive, it has recently developed an intermittent spin drive problem. Sometimes it will work, sometimes it won't do anything, other times it will chatter badly while attempting to spin. Sound like the clutch here too? I replaced the motor coupling; It was not broken although the biscuit had certainly seen better days. I was expecting it to be really torn up, almost thirty years, three different houses and outlasted two wives and countless loads of clothes.
I'll also make a little mention of RepairClinic.com
- I'm sure that most of you who have dealt with them have been by Internet, but they have a "brick and mortar" headquarters, fifteen minutes from where I work. They are a great group of people to deal with; not only do they have a nice website and excellent live chat, but the counter people are knowledgeable and pleasant...more than I can say for one that is about three miles from my house. RepairClinic is a good company to deal with IMO.
