Kenmore Heavy Duty Washer - Spins intermittently
« on: August 31, 2011, 10:53:03 PM »
We bought this machine in 2005 and it's served us well doing laundry around the clock for 6 people in our family, but this washing machine is being evil  :tickedoff: It spins intermittently some times to where you have to forcibly spin the drum for it to begin turning while other times it performs as designed. Some say it's the coupler and others the clutch assembly but being so intermittent is just making matters worse trying to pin down the root problem. I have noticed that it doesn't spin as fast as it use to as well. Thanks for your time.

Common clutch problem.  O0Replace the clutch. While you are doing that inspect the coupler for wear and replace it too if needed.

I also have a Kenmore / Whirlpool direct drive, it has recently developed an intermittent spin drive problem.  Sometimes it will work, sometimes it won't do anything, other times it will chatter badly while attempting to spin.  Sound like the clutch here too?  I replaced the motor coupling; It was not broken although the biscuit had certainly seen better days.  I was expecting it to be really torn up, almost thirty years, three different houses and outlasted two wives and countless loads of clothes.

I'll also make a little mention of RepairClinic.com - I'm sure that most of you who have dealt with them have been by Internet, but they have a "brick and mortar" headquarters, fifteen minutes  from where I work.  They are a great group of people to deal with; not only do they have a nice website and excellent live chat, but the counter people are knowledgeable and pleasant...more than I can say for one that is about three miles from my house.  RepairClinic is a good company to deal with IMO.

Your lid switch is most likely suspect on int spin.

in regards to a machine clattering while trying to spin it may just be the clutch but have also seen gear strip in transmission and will make it chatter

My lid switch is bypassed, it broke a long time ago... ;)

Today I worked on one of these. It was spinning just as you describe. The clutch band pads were thin as razor blades and had jumped partially out of the clutch housing. I replaced the clutch band and put er back. She runs fine now. Took some pix:
