Plumbing question for Icemaker line

Not sure if anyone will know this, but I am installing a water line for my refrigerator and have a question about plumbing it in.  My water line in the basement under the kitchen is capped with a threaded plug.  I'm guessing this is to be able to drain the line for winterizing, both hot and cold lines have these plugs in about the same place. 

I was thinking of attaching a brass 3/4 MIP to 1/2 Barb(for Pex) connector.  Then I can put a quick connect reducing valve on the line there and run 1/4 Pex up into the kitchen. 

So I guess my question is about the threaded plug.  Is there some other reason for this plug to be here or some reason why i wouldn't want to use this entry to the water line for my refrigerator water supply?

I use 1/4" copper water line and 1/4" brass compression fittings.

Not sure what you got going on there with the 3/4" plug, but could you adapt a "T" fitting to it so you could put a plug back in one end of the "T" so the cap could still be removed to drain the water line?

Unscrew the plug and screw in a 3/4" 'T' fitting, just a thought...
I'm not much of a plumber.

In any case I would adapt the 3/4" MIP to 1/4" compression and from there run 1/4" copper line to the refrigerator.

I just get use a refridgerator install kit from any big box store.  You can get flex copper or pex.  It will come with a saddle valve as well as compression fittings.  That way there's no need for re-plumb's or even turning water off.

You will like the quick connect reducing valve , I always put a shut off on the line behind the ref. Helps down the road.

As AJ said. Tee off the plug and have water supply for the I/M and a drain.

Thanks for the responses guys.  Would've responded sooner but I got caught out of town by the hurricane.  Thats a good idea with the T at the end.  I'm thinking of going a little different route now because I really hate the taste of the softened water and I'd like to run a line from my hard water to the fridge.  So with that I would tee off of the line near my water softener.  Anyone have thoughts about running hard water into these things?

You could install an in-line filter easy.

If your refrigerator does not already have a built in filter then a Inline Water Filter is a good idea.
