ge side by side
« on: August 04, 2011, 05:56:50 PM »
This Frig makes a clicking sound but the compressor isn't kicking in.  Fan runs and clicks off.  I am thinking it is the start relay but maybe the motherboard.  Is there a way to test the relay.

Is the fan running down there by the compressor? IF it is then the compressor should also be running.

If the start relay is getting voltage to it then the Control Board should be fine.

Here is the START RELAY for your model.

I would ohm the compressor windings to make sure they are ok before i ordered a new relay.

Kind of thinking the same thing myself.  Actually I believe it is a PTC relay with a run capacitor.  The fan only runs momentarily, with the clicking sound, then it stops running.  I am not to familiar with the computer boards and how to check them.  So I figure to check the PTC relay first.

My buddy Larry and I worked on one a while back. Found a loose connection on the board and soldiered it back. The fan would come on but the compressor would not. So after soldiering that spot and putting it back it worked. Here are some PHOTOS of the repair.

Thanks for manuals.  I ordered a new board.  The board just keeps making a clicking sound.  At first I thought it might be the PTC Relay and Overload, but there was a definite clicking coming from the board. No fan at all now, or compressor run.  I haven't put it on yet, so I'll wait and see.  Thanks for manuals, I'll check them out.

check the back of the board for burns or cold solder joints... also check the capacitor tops sometimes they bulge on the top or lift off the board..

Check the Basics first!!! Read the Manual !!!Buy the tech a Beer!!!

Before I messed with the board I would take the start relay off, ohm the compressor then ohm the relay.  A lot of those GE relays will make a rattling sound when you shake it a little bit, good indication that it is broken.

1)clicking relay on board
   a) cold solder joint on relay
   b) capacitor Not keeping relay closed/open
2)fan motors changing speed quickly
3)burn resistors on board ( shorted fan motor)
   a) also replace fan motor (fan motor not working)
4)Everything is freezing over in the bottom and the top
   b) Fan speed not correct for air flow

Anything else you guys can think of?
