LG combo washer/dryer not draining fully, has slow leak
« on: July 20, 2011, 04:26:07 PM »
Hi again, all,

Our washer's been chugging along well since the repair on the thermistor/drain pipe, but recently there was a problem with the water main in our condo complex, and since the water's been back on, the washing machine has been acting funny. There's no error code, but there might be a problem with a valve(?) or something, because when we leave the cold water turned on and connected to the washer, even when we don't run a load of laundry, the drum slowly fills up with water.

Background:

Two things happened when they were fixing the water main: There was a lot of sediment in the water while they were in the process of fixing it, and then the water pressure was weird for a few days after they were finished. For the first couple of days after (as far as we know) they were done, it was difficult to shut off the water fully it kept leaking unless we pushed the knobs down really hard). Then for about a day (last Friday, we think), the water was less hard to turn off, but still not normal. Then it went back to normal. Friday, the in-between day, was the first day we noticed the washer had a problem the laundry we threw in the washer on Thursday night was sitting wet in the machine on Friday morning. It was just wet enough that we thought there might be a *drying* problem, so we ran a dry cycle to test, and forgot about it until Saturday, when we opened the washer door and got a waterfall. ;) When we took the filter cover off the front of the machine and removed the drain pump filter, water gushed from there, too. So we turned off the water source connected to the washer.

What we've tried/found:

Since Sunday we've checked hose connection points and cleaned sediment out of various hoses. We've tried turning on just the hot water, and just the cold water, and water flows from the small drain hose in the front of the machine (by the drain pump filter) only when the cold water is on. It also makes a soft hissing noise with the cold water on, but not with just the hot water on. And the water comes out of the drain hose in waves it flows strongly for a second, then it drips for a second, then it flows for a second, then it drips, etc.

Also, on Monday the cold-water handle in the wall was hissing and leaking a little, but that went away on Tuesday when we tightened the nut in the wall, disconnected the cold-water inlet hose, cleaned out some sediment, and reconnected it to the machine. (The SO says he might have accidentally loosened the nut himself when he was turning the water on and off, though, and he notes that this spot has leaked before, though not recently, so that might not be relevant to the machine's problem.)

So ... any suggestions as to what we should check, look at, test...?

Thanks for any help!

Oops I should have changed the subject line to "LG combo washer/dryer has slow leak" or something like that. ;) I forgot to do that before I hit "post."

If the screen on the water inlet valve is clean and you have good water pressure you may have to replace the water inlet valve.

Some sediment may have got past the screen into the water inlet valve and into the working parts of the valve.

Cleaning the screen(s) on the water inlet valve did the trick! At least it sees to have no more hissing noise, no more drum filling up with water while the machine is off.

Thanks a BUNCH for your help! I love this place. :D

Er, it "seems" to have. Sheesh. We may have a working washing machine, but apparently that doesn't make me proofread stuff before I post it. ;)
