Remove the bottom crisper bin to see if a model number is listed there.

On the Amana's the evaporator fan is wired through the defrost thermostat.  The fan won't turn on unless the defrost thermostat is closed.  So, if you're just starting up a warm fridge or it's just coming out of defrost, the fan is delayed a few minutes.

They want to wire it this way to get the evap really cold before starting the fan. GE has a similar wiring scheme.

So, in order to test if it is working properly.  I need to test the defrost thermostat and see if it is closed when the evap coils are cold.  Right?  If it is closed then I shouldn't get any continuity reading?  am I on the right track here?

Yes, that is correct.

If it's closed then you will get a reading of 0 ohms, just like if you touched the two meter test leads together.

Make sure when you check the defrost thermostat with your ohm meter that the refrigerator is unplugged and at least one lead on the defrost thermostat is disconnected.

Thanks for your help AJ.  Okay so I tested the thermostat when the coils were as cold as they will get and it tests fine.  I get a reading of zero.  But, the fridge is working just fine and dandy right now.  It's just when it goes into defrost and kicks back on the amount of time it takes for the evap fan to kick on is 3 or 4 hours.  I think that is to long don't you?

Yes, that is to long.

Maybe the defrost thermostat does not close quick enough after it finishes a defrost cycle.

For what a defrost thermostat cost it maybe worth replacing to see if that fixes the problem.

Ya, I will replace it.  It looks like it has been replaced once before though.  Should that be something I need to take into consideration?

I took the defrost theromstat out of the fridge.  I heard it open up so I tested it and got a reading of 1, I think that is normal when it is open, right?  Then I tried to see if I could get it to close again, I got a class of ice water and set the thermostat in the ice and I could not get it to close again.  Ill bet after 3 or 4 hours of that it would close though.  I think we are after the right animal.

No, if the thermostat is open you would have no reading at all, just like the two test leads were not touching anything.

okay, a reading of 1 on my digital multi-meter means no reading.  it just stayed at one.

I replaced the thermostat.  plugged the unit back in.  The coils took about 5 mintues to get cold and the evap fan turned right on.  Got it working like it should!  Now I can do what I do best and work on getting it looking brand new.  Thanks guys.  Thanks AJ

Just for the record, a glass of ice water might not be cold enough to close the thermostat. Check the open and close temps printed on the side of the thermostat. Some don't close until well below freezing.

The most popular generic termination thermostat opens at 50 f and closes at 25f.
