Kenmore Fridge getting no power to it.
« on: July 08, 2011, 01:45:46 PM »
Just picked up this Kenmore fridge.  I was unable to see if it worked because the house had no power, they had just moved out.  Brought it back and plugged it in and got no power to the unit.  Nothing has power, no lights on in the inside no fans spinning, nothing.  I assume it needs a new power cord, but, it is kind of a weird set up and I am not even sure if that is the problem.  What should I do?

Get your multimeter out and check the power cord.

Okay the power cord tests good.  I was originally plugging it into a GFI, which shouldn't be an issue because I always get my appliances to work in that outlet.  I plugged it into a regular outlet and it kicked on, great!   BUT, the compressor is getting really hot, the fan next to the compressor is spinning (maybe not as fast as it should) then the thing that is really weird is the strip between the fridge and freezer is getting really really hot.  I know they are supposed to heat up a little bit, but, I can't even put my hand to it it is so hot.  Why would it be doing that?

Does the refrigerator and freezer cool ok?

If it's not cooling good, the condenser fan runs and the condenser coils are clean then you may have a sealed system problem.

I have seen a number of problems with refrigerators and freezers tripping GFI outlets for no reason.

Often times these are refrigerators that worked fine in someones kitchen for years and when they got a new refrigerator they moved the old one out to the garage and plugged it into a GFI.

I think there are some appliance manufactures that even recommend not to use GFI's with there refrigerators/freezers.

I should probably clean out all the dust on the condensor fan and coils.  The freezer seems to be blowing nice cool air, it needs to be on longer for me to tell if the fridge side is cooling okay.  sealed system problems usually just mean it needs a new gasget?

Sealed system problem means something with the refrigeration system. Leaks, restrictions, bad/week compressor.

Okay, well should I let it run over night then check the evap coils to see if they are frosted all the way?  I figure if the system isn't sealed then the evap coils wont all be cold

Whats the best way to clean them?  just pull the bottom plate off and take a tooth brush to it? haha.  I took a blower to it and that did okay.  Any other suggestions?

In customers homes I use a condenser coil brush and a vacuum. Blowing it out works good if your don't mind the mess it makes. Run it over night and report back.

I lay the ice box over on the side Compressor feed lines up to minimize oil running out the compressor and clogging the lines. Then I use a whisk broom to remove most of the big stuff and shop vac to get what i can then a lawn leaf blower after that. I get as much oil as I can in that condenser motor using zoomspout oil.

I ended up tilting the fridge on its side and getting those compressor coils cleaned really well.  the strip between the fridge and freezer is not nearly as hot as it was and the compressor seems to have cooled down a little bit also.  Looks like the thing is cooling really well and everything is all good!
