Maytag A712 won't agitate

Maytag A712 Washer will not agitate.  Drive belt smelled of burning. Replaced it, same thing. If I advance the timer, it drains and spins fine. There is no noise in the transmission, and the motor seems fine and slides ok. The transmission seems very hard to turn by hand, at least the thing with the offset weights   . I did clean all the pulleys.  The old belt seemed ok, also, but I replaced it. I cannot turn the agitator by hand.
Transmission? Or something simpler and cheaper? Thanks!

If your trans pulley is hard to turn and binding, your output shaft of the trans is seizing.  Not much you can do for the old girl.

If you really love your washer you could replace the transmission, 6-2097750.  

If you had the orbital transmission, it's not too bad a job to replace the agitator shaft.  You say you have counterweights so you don't have the orbital trans.
