A.J,
I own my own appliance service business here in Louisiana and I have also worked for SEARS as an appliance service technician. I would appreciate it if you would add me to your Let's Talk Service board. This site is the best service site on the net and I have enjoyed being a member here. I am always learning something from other techs and perhaps I can help others also.
Thanks,
iceman

Hi i am a new member. I am considering taking a coarse and becoming certified(?) I've always had a knack for this kind of thing, taking things apart and putting things back together, fixing things, installing.. ect. but i have a few questions/reservations about the whole thing. Is there any truth to the whole women in the industry thing? do people prefer men? would i be shunned? Is there even any room left for me in this kind of field, or would people just rather buy new? any experiences or comments would be appreciated.

norimw there is room for women in any field to learn and excel.
Kellonie on this forum has her own repair business in North Carolina and is doing very well.
No one knows it all except maybe REG US PAT_OFF and REPAIRMAN and they have been wrong on occasion.
My advice to you is DO IT.

I agree,  if any is to shrug you off they're wrong for doing so.  There are two or three female tech's in my area

There is also a Female tech that works for sears and one that works for A & E in my area.  If they can do it. You can do it.  Put your all into it, and you will do just fine  ;)
Authorized Samsung, Electrolux, Whirlpool, GE, Fisher Paykal, and Maytag Servicer with over 10 years experience.

hey thanks guys i really appreciate the support! but what about the other part of my post repair vs replace? what has been your experience. i know people would just rather replace something like a tv or even a refrigerator because there is always something newer and more hi-tec. but what about other things?

When it comes to these newer electronically controlled appliances Buyer Beware!
You had best invest in keeping the old machines going. My opinion.
May the hinges of our friendship
        never grow rusty.

About the icons: The beer is tip link, if a tech saves ya some money buy em a 6 pack. The small green square=personal message. The green dot is a link to my web page on appliance repair and other general BS I love to post. The letter sends me email.
I love fan letters! LOL
