Haier Fridge Hot/Freezer Cold

My neighbor has a Haier refrigerator that over the weekend the fridge compartment became warm yet the freezer was ice cold. I’m not a refrigerant service tech but am handy with electronics.

From a little Googling, since it wasn’t a Freon leak I figured perhaps a bad thermostat or defrost timer. I opened up the panels on the inside of the freezer and found the three holes feeding air to the fridge completely iced up. Even though I had unplugged the power five minutes before I still got a nice burn from the defrost coil. I opened up the access panel on the bottom back and didn’t see any sort of timer and the schematic was pretty useless as the print was blurry.

I thawed out all the ice, disconnected the defrost coil and put it all back together just to make it through the holiday. Any thoughts on what may be wrong and the location of the components I can check further with a meter. My neighbor is a single mom with not a whole lot of money to spend and I’d like to help her out on the cheap.

{disconnected the defrost coil} is this the defrost heater ? you got a burn then it was working ... check the drain at the bottom of the freezer it may be plugged.. plug the defrost heat back in....

Yes, sorry, disconnected the heater, and found out it worked, ouch! My neighbor said it works great now but obviously will no longer self defrost. I'll hook up the coil and see what happens next. Anyone have a service manual with wiring and parts location?

Well sure enough everything froze up again. I noticed this time the evaporate fan was not turning, no power spins free, powered up just rocks back and forth. Wonder if motor is bad or one leg of power is bad. I need to get out the meter and check. Other thing the drain IS CLOGGED! Tried thawing but didn't drain, read the SB about having issues and how it takes a right turn. Also about intermittent wiring issues. Tbc'd

You must have a bad termination thermostat

Bench tested the evap motor by plugging directly into ac outlet, same result, fan just rocks back and forth and doesn't spin. Saw the list price of $80+, may not be worth it.

Just wanted to let you know, it was the evap motor and also a clogged drain. Works great now! And my neighbor is glad it only cost $60 or so, plus my sweat.
