Amana Washer Will spin with, clutch is engaging brake every rotation

Hello there,
I found some great advice from you guys so I decided to become a member and post my problem.  The washer started clanking louding during spin cycle today.  I was able to view the clutch and brake assembly and saw that it was engaging about once every rotation.  The tub will spin, but slowly.  I have removed the motor and transmission, checked the motor coupling, nothing wrong there.  I am wondering if it is the transmission.  I ran the spin cycle with the motor sitting out and the shaft spins quite slowly and I can stop it with light grip pressure.  Also the coming out of the transmission does not spin continuously, it has a start/stop rhythm.  Also, when I rotate the motor by hand, the shaft will spin and then it will stop for about 4 rotations and then start spinning again.  Does any of this make sense or seem normal.  

Any advice?

That could be the motor capacitor.

Need a good model number.  If it has a coupler, it's the Whirlpool direct drive design.  It sounds like the transmission.  It may be trying to spin and agitate at the same time.  You can replace the transmission, 3360629, or tear it apart and replace the cam, 285206. If you could post a video, I'd know for sure if it's the transmission.

I am pretty sure the model is 8318015 for Amana, a simple top load washer.  It does have a coupler between the motor and the transmission.  The piece that comes out of the tranny is not spinning continuously, it is doing a spin stop, spin stop cycle, which means the clutch is disengaging the brake in the same cycle.  I will try and post a video tomorrow.  The tranny repair looks challenging, is it?  Thanks.

8318015 is the part number stamped on the rear panel of the washer and not the model.  This is a DD WHP chassis unit.  It sounds like you have a bad trans. but the video will tell all!

The tranny repair looks challenging, is it?

It's not so much challenging as it is messy because of the oil.  A new cam will fix the problem though for a lot less cost.

Thanks guys,  It was a bad tranny.  I got a used one off of an old Whirlpool and it working fine.  I am sure it won't be for too long, but my wife is doing laundry and the kids can take off the dirty clothes they have been wearing for days.
