Washing machine won't go to wash/spin/rinse cycle
« on: May 23, 2011, 06:43:22 PM »
I have a Maytag model 142 that will not go into the wash cycle.  It had a leaky water valve which I replaced with an aftermarket valve.  The washer fills up with water and stops when it reaches the fill line, so the fill sensor works but the machine just sits there and never goes to the next cycle.

Could the aftermarket water valve be defective?  Or did I rewire it back incorrectly?

Model 142

Couldn't bring up the model but would love to see the lid switch assembly. I think I may know what the problem is. Can you post a photo?

Oh is that the lid switch that shuts off the washer when the lid is lifted?  If so, I can take a picture of that.  I did remove the lid assembly because I replaced the water inlet hose.

The washing machine is at my parent's house so I can take some pics in a few days.  Is there something in particular I should look for when taking the pics??

As for not finding the model #, this model, #142 is fairly old.  It was built in 1957 or 1956 but in the past, I was able to cross-reference the parts when I replaced the motor and water inlet valve.  For instance, the water inlet valve is a 3-solenoid valve and apparently the Eaton equivalent is CW-26.  But it's getting harder and harder to find parts....

I think those were some of the best machines ever made. The only thing I ever changed on them was belts.

1956-57!  Thats amazing.  I can't say I have ran into one of these.  If they are as reliable as appdoc says, its a good thing everyone doesn't have one.  We would all be out of business  ;D

I had one that had it's first service call ever. That was 4 years ago. Same age. Where the water injects into the inlet area ( like a funnel)  it was copper tubing and the end corroded away causing it to leak. I installed a short piece of plastic hose on the end of the tube and clamped it. The lady was 94 and passed away 14 mos ago. The washer was still working according to her son. He was going to call Maytag and see if the wanted it. Years ago Maytag had a contest for the oldest working Maytag washer. Customer got a brand new top load machine and bragging rights.

I think those were some of the best machines ever made. The only thing I ever changed on them was belts.

Well over the years I replaced the water inlet valve 3 times.  The first time I got a used water valve free from the local Maytag repairman.  Unfortunately he has passed on.  And the third time I replaced it is now.

About 12 years ago I replaced the motor but kept the old one so I can rebuild it.  The commutator and brushes need to be fixed.  And I replaced the belt.  Other than that, this has been a great washer.

Twenty years ago my mother enter her washing machine in a similar contest for the San Gabriel Valley (Southern Cal).  She won a new top load machine which is at my house.  The design of the new and old machine are basically the same but different enough that I can't swap parts!  :tickedoff:

Looking for a rubber lid bumper...
« Reply #14 on: May 25, 2011, 11:10:30 PM »
Does anyone know where I can get a rubber bumper thing for the lid?  I've tried a couple of local parts places like Coast Appliance and Marcone but could not find  the part.  I've attached pics of what I'm looking for.
