Help! Ice maker not working
« on: May 24, 2011, 09:50:38 AM »
Hello all,

My icemaker has stopped working in my Whirlpool Gold refrigerator.  When it first stopped working I was able to unplug the fridge and plug it back in and it would sometimes start making ice again.  Now it won't work at all.  It is the In-Door-Ice maker with the infrared sensors.  Any help to diagnose the problem would be appreciated.  Also  let me know if most people end up replacing the unit.

Thanks for your help!

Darren

Per the normal test the sensor seems to be ok.  What would you look at next?
Thanks,
Darren

Is the ice mold full of ice waiting to be harvested? Or is it empty and waiting on water?

It appears to be empty and waiting on water.

Then either your water valve is faulty (which is what I would lean towards) OR your ice maker is not sending power to the valve. As you may know the water valve is powered up for 7.5 secs at very near the end of the harvest cycle. A probe from the head rubs a copper plate and BOOM we gets water yall. Removing the main drive gear and cleaning the plate is iffy. 50/50 chance of success.

Is the ejector parked?  When you look at the icemaker, the fingers should be pointing toward you just above the rim of the mold.  If the fingers are pointing somewhere else, you most likely need a new module W10190935. I replace a lot of them.

It looks like the fingers are facing me.  Then I held down the switch that closes when the freezer is closed and the fingers went down out of sight?

The fingers disappearing is it starting a harvest cycle. If it makes it all the around to the parked position without filling with water it probably is a bad water inlet valve.  Sometimes the inlet tube will freeze over. Some the older models with in-door ice had a problem with the inlet tube freezing up.  There is an updated inlet tube with a heater. Look behind the fridge where the tube enters the fridge. If it enters on the freezer side, you may need the heated inlet tube.  If it enters above the refrigerator side, you don't need the heated tube.

I looked at the back of the fridge.  The grey tube enters at the bottom right of the fridge.  The clear tube comes back out of there and enters at the top of the fridge right in the center.  Would you lean towards thinking it is not getting water, and it is the water valve that is the problem?  If so what is the part number please?
Thanks, you guys are awesome!

I looked up your model number and the water valve is part # W10159839.

Before ordering the water valve I would remove the line that goes to the ice maker and try to blow air through it to make sure it's not frozen shut.
