Your suggestion indirectly helped me solve the problem. I was in the process of taking off the front panel to better access the hose when I saw that one of the harness connectors to the door lock had come loose. Reconnecting it solved my problem and the machine is now working fine. Who would have thought that a disconnection at the door lock would cause the machine to think it had a high water level status.
It is a good lesson for fault diagnosis that the causes are not always obvious. Thank you, JJW, for trying to help.
