any opinions on Speed Queen washers?

I was wondering whether Speed Queen washers are made to last, since it seems like the other brands all break down quickly. What do you all think about that brand? Is it or any brand built to last decades like all our old washers were?

Nothing will last like the old washers but Speed Queen is by far the best top load I think out there.

I don't have a Speed Queen model # because I have not yet bought one. They are more expensive than standard home washers but they are generally built solid. As 1 measure, they outweigh any other washer - shipping weight = 195 lbs. Stainless steel tub and galvanized steel box. I am looking at model AWN542 [top loading]. Our family does at least 10 loads of laundry a week and our Whirlpool is no longer spinning at all or agitating strongly after only 5 years. I don't know if this makes a difference in washer life span but the water is extremely hard where I live, Jerusalem; nobody needs any calcium supplements here!

We have hard water here in Alabama too. The stainless steel tub attached to the pot metal transmission with laundry detergent added causes the pot metal to litterally fall apart making that beautimous speed queen leak like heck and is impossible to repair without costing some major bucks. If i was you i would fix the direct drive whirlpool washer you have. Probably just a broken part less than $20 to fix and anyone can do it.
