Kenmore Washer Smoking

Put on a load to wash this morning and heard a weird sound coming from the washer in the spin cycle. When I checked on it there was a burning smell and a small amount of smoke coming from it. I removed the front cover and saw what looked like a destroyed bearing. I'm wondering is this the cause, or a result, of the problem. Pics attached. One is the bearing, the other is where it came from.

Well, it wasn't exactly running quietly 

I was just out tinkering a little and pulled some more debris from where the bearing used to be and the shaft is now turning freely again. Is there a way to replace these bearings without buying a whole new transmission? And what is their technical name if I order them?
