Whirlpool DD - HS Spin Only After Opening/Closing Lid
« on: April 06, 2011, 08:17:45 PM »
The title pretty much sums it up.  The washer does everything well.  I can open and close the lid during agitation and it will stop when it's supposed too and restart when the lid closes.  But when it comes to the high speed spin cycle the motor will whir until I open and then close the lid. When i do that, I hear the clutch engage (clunk) and it starts the HS spin.

Something weird with the electronics?  Why would the switch sensor work for all other cycles except the HS spin... and why would opening and closing make it work?

Might just be something as simple as a loose lid hinge. Seen it.

What happens if you leave the washer alone?  Do you have unspun clothes at the end of the cycle? What you're describing sounds normal.  The washer is supposed to drain in neutral, then a short pause and then spin out. If you're not getting the pause to shift the trans into spin then you have a bad timer or control.  If you are getting the pause and it's intermittantly not spinning you have problem with the neutral kit in the transmission.

Thanks for the responses guys!  Great site.  Sounds like I'll be buying a few rounds for you guys.

I did check for a loose lid/switch.  This is consistent and repeatable every time, so I'm pretty sure the lid/switch isn't the culprit.

If I leave it completely alone, indeed it will simply drain and start the next cycle without the spin.

I can catch the drain cycle, with it not doing any spinning.  Then when I open the lid to see that the HS spin hasn't begun and then close the lid, the HS spin begins.  It really does feel like a timing issue, where the HS Spin is starting before something else has completed and by opening and closing the lid, it's giving the cycle a chance to begin.

Just to be safe, I'm going to go try another load and let it drain completely and see if by chance I'm just getting impatient on the drain cycle and it happens to time on while I have the lid open.

Curious, is there a way to test the timer/controller?

In the final spin the timer is not pausing so that the neutral drain transmission can lock in.
Bad timer.

Yep, I think jumptrout51's timer diagnosis is probably it.  It goes into the HS Spin cycle on the final rinse without any need to open the lid to pause it.  So it's only the first rinse cycle where it doesn't seem to pause long enough to engage.

So, just buy a new timer and pop it in?

The innards of that lid switch might be going out. Try bypassing the switch entirely before ordering anything.

There is a spot when you start a new topic were you are asked for a model number.

AJ also asked you for it.

Giving us the model number should not be to much to ask for in exchange for free professional advice so why don't you post it for us?

It may just help someone else find a solution to there washer problem when they search using there model number.
