20" roper gas oven pilot

I have a roper 20" stove/oven with a pilot light system.  There is no electricity going to it all.
The top burners work fine. however, I can't get the pilot to light.  the current owner does not know if it worked before or not.

I is there a way to check the components

I would also be interested the basics of how the pilot light valve and control parts work (non-electric)

Click on photo to enlarge. Your pilot probably has a safety valve with a thermocouple on it. As long as that probe is heated a bi-metal inside is held open. When the oven control is turned on and the oven is cold the thermostatic probe allows the gas to flow from the rail above down to the safety valve. If the pilot is lit the gas will continue out to the burner where the pilot lights the gas. The fire stays on until the bulb heats up to that control and closes off the flow of gas. The pilot could simply be blown out or the safety valve itself could be gone.

The pilot assembly probably has corrosion and or rust in it that is stopping the gas flow.
Also,look under the top for a pilot adjustment screw on the oven thermostat.
It may be turned down.

thats what I thought.  Thanks for the info.

I was too impatient the first time and couldn't get it lit.  had to hold the thermostat control in and hold my lighter for about 30 seconds to get it too light.

It may need air purging in that case.
