Whirlpool direct drive shaft seal replacement

Hi everyone,

I have been spending a lot of time on this forum and it has given me the confidence to attempt to fix my washer. I was having spin issues so I am replacing the clutch, but I noticed some oil on the floor & clutch and I want to replace the oil seal while I am at it, but I am not sure how. I have the seal, part number 3349985. Do I need to open the gear case to do this or is it possible to do it from the outside? I tried to gently pry it up but it seems snug.

You have to remove the clutch and the tranny cover. Knock out the old seal and tap in a new one using a wood block to protect the part. Oil the seal before you tap it in, clock tighten the tranny cover screws. Do not overtighten. Use some permatext 2 for gasket if you prefer. Nothing to it.

Thanks for the reply! I was successful in replacing the seal. I also replaced the coupler, the clutch, and the agitator dogs. The washer's timer was also not advancing so I replaced the timer as well.

Now I am having a new problem and I am about ready to try the baseball bat approach.  The washer will fill, fast agitate, and slow agitate perfectly but when it is time for the spin step (I think) after the slower agitation, the washer just makes a humming, electrical buzzing sound. If I advance the timer a tiny bit, it will finish the load without any more problems, although on the last attempt I had to spin the tub a little manually before the washer would engage and spin. I am out of things to try. Am I missing something obvious here?

Either a weak motor or something stuck in the pump or a brake not releasing.
You have replaced too many other parts to be any significance.

did you make sure there is no oil on the clutch? sprya it with break cleaner will get it all nice and clean
