Dishwasher fills and drains just as fast.

The unit drains as fast as it fills. Checked the resistance of the drain motor winding and it was 6.8 ohms and it is supposed to be between 4.0 and 7.0 so that should be good.

How exactly is the drain supposed to work on one of these units? I was expecting to see a solenoid or something in the drain line but did not see anything.

Is there any good literature that explains how this thing is supposed to work?

Is the drain hose looped up to the bottom of the cabinet?  Gravity will drain the machine if the hose just goes straight down.

That is an interesting idea, what causes the dishwasher to drain is it gravity? I know my washing machine will drain if the hose is not looped up and into the P-Trap at a height of "x" inches don't remember what it is at the moment. Then the spinning of the pump pushes the water out the hose. Is a dishwasher supposed to work the same way?  I have been in the house a little over a year and it has worked fine. The interesting part is the drain hose goes through the floor to a drain pipe and P-Trap in the basement. I am going to have to find the install manual for this thing and read it. Maybe it is a miracle this thing has been working for the last year.
