Kenmore refrigerator inop
« on: February 03, 2011, 11:57:15 AM »
My brother in laws Kenmore refrigerator up and quit on him. Was working fine in the morning, and that night everything was warm and thawed.  :(

It's plugged in, the light works, and the fan runs, but no cooling happens.

Any suggestions on what to check?

Check the compressor fan motor.
Is it running?
If it is running and the compressor is not,the start relay on the compressor is the place to start looking for a power problem.
Compressor start relays are a common failing part.

Compressor is NOT running.

Where is the start relay located?

It is on the side of the compressor where the wires attach.

I went by the local appliance parts storre, and they didn't have the start relay alone. They had a kit with a slew of parts in it.

2 different overloads (relays?)

1 start device

1 overload

1 cover

and 1 wire (couldn't find the pic)

I'm thinking this may be what I need. Price was $65.99.

What y'all think?

They had more than one production run and used a couple different compressors. Match the relay up with your old one and connect it the same way and you should be good to go.

Well I bought the kit, and went to my brother in laws to work on the frige. Took the back off the frige, and the only thing in the kit that resembled anything in the frige was the overload.

So I bypassed the overload, and the compressor kicked on. I'll take the kit back and get the overload, and we should be good to go.

When I look up your model number this is the factory part number I found.

Relay-combo device combination (start relay and overload for production compressor only) Part # 2258450
