Whirlpool Kitchenaid Built-In Double Oven F5 E1 Error Code
Here are the three causes of F5 door lock related errors. Two of them can be expected by looking at the wiring diagram. The third one is totally unexpected and not mentioned in the Tech Sheet error description section (or anyware else that we're aware of).

The Symptom and Documented Solution
An F5-E1 error is thrown on the lower oven.

The Tech Sheet says:

F5 E1 “Self-clean latch will not lock”

  1. Check the latch assembly: latch arm pivot joint, arm/solenoid connection, solenoid  spring, and spring washer.
  2. Check the Latch Solenoid:
  - Check for firm electrical connections.
  - Disconnect the two wires from the solenoid and measure the resistance of
  the solenoid. A small resistance (approx. 175Ω) is normal. If the solenoid is
  open (∞Ω) or shorted (0Ω), it should be replaced. 
  3. Check the Latch Switch. Disconnect it and use a continuity tester:
  - Door latched = switch closed, continuity should read 0Ω.
  - Door unlatched = switch open, continuity should read∞Ω.
  4. Check Door Open/Closed Switch. Disconnect it and use a continuity tester:
  - Door open = switch closed, continuity should read 0Ω.
  - Door closed = switch open, continuity should read∞Ω.
  5. Check power and element connections.

The Actual Causes

1. Problems with switches in the latch mechanism as mentioned in tech sheet. - Fix: Repair or replace lock mechanism/switches.

2. Door latch drive or door switch detect failed in control board. - Fix: We take care of this with our board rebuild process.

3. Here's the kicker -  this cause is not at all obvious!

Self-clean in the bottom oven of a Whirlpool Double oven is an option. The models that don't have self-clean in the bottom oven still use the same control board as those that do have the option. A unique combination of shorts in the keypad membrane tell  the control board which options are implemented in a particular oven.

A frequent failure mechanism in the keypad causes the short that indicates “no bottom self-clean model” to fail open circuit – confusing the control board into thinking that there is a lock mechanism on the bottom oven! Now the control board tries to activate the non-existent bottom oven lock mechanism – and throws an error because it doesn't work (or exist)! - Fix: replace membrane keypad.
