Maytag washer wont spin

During a recent load of laundry the spin cycle did not completely rinse the water from the tub.  I noticed that it was not spinning at full speed.  I took a look undrneath and found a broken brake pad, so I replaced it.  Now the machine is even worse.  I found that the pulley tensioner is not applying enough tension on the belt to make the tub spin.  If I hold the tensioner tight it spins fine.  When i put it back together with the spring on it does not work.  Nothing seems bent nor does the spring seem stretched out.  The belt has no wear and tear.  How do I fix this issue?

The belt is slipping because there is not enough pressure from the tension spring.  Should I change the belt and the tension arm?

I have now replaced the belt and ran a cycle.  It seemed fine until it came to the spin cycle, the tub stopped spinning.  If I applied pressure to the tension arm it works fine.  Why is the belt slipping or not getting enough tension?

You have to look at why the belt is dragging...usually the answer is a bad tub bearing preventing the drive pulley from turning well. You can test this yourself by removing the belt from the large center drive pulley and turn it yourself in both directions, making sure the tub turns. If the triple lip seal and bearing is bad, this will be a super fun project for you.  Not
