Kenmore series 400 washer--fills then nothing
« on: January 24, 2011, 01:46:49 PM »
My 3 year old washer stopped when it hit "rinse" and now won't do anything. I hand scooped the water out. It will fill with water, but it will not agitate, drain or spin, on any of the cycles. I cannot find a service manual. I'm baffled as to how to get the cabinet off. (I was going to check if the pump is clogged) The screws seem to be hidden. (I do hear clicking when lifting or closing the cover, so I assume the lid switch is ok?) This icon shows my present state of mind. Help, please??

Very nice. Do you have a video for that coupling you mentioned? Because it won't do anything whether or not there's water in it. The only thing it will do is fill with water. Thanks again. I appreciate your quick response. The "other" place--no reply in 8 days. 77 views, not 1 person could even tell me how to get the case off.

Please do keep us updated and let us know if you have any more questions.

We are affiliated with AppliancePartsPros.com and RepairClinic.com for appliance parts sales.

Unlike either of them two site I started our site to help others online repair there appliances.

Though it's nice if you use our affiliate links to one of them two sites if you do need to purchase part selling appliance parts is not our main goal.

I even try to help out on the APP forum when I can along with some other appliance repair forums.

Anyway.... let us know how you turn out with the repair.
Hope you find our site helpful.

I am thinking you have something stuck in your drain pump and stopping the motor from turning, part # 3363394

It wouldn't surprise me. The wife has a thing about not emptying her pockets. I will probably tear it down today, now that I know how. I will update when I know.....

OK, I got the case off and checked the pump. It seems fine--no clogs no leaks. I do, however, have another question. Should I be able to spin the agitator (bottom 1/2) by hand? Because I can't. It seems frozen in place.

OK. I got the motor off. It spins freely, and does not smell burnt at all. The coupler is A-OK. The pump is good. no leaks, no clogs. Spins freely. I broke the dam switch, so I'm gonna have to replace it. But before I spend the $26.00, I need to know. Should I be able to spin the agitator (bottom 1/2) by hand, in either direction?? I cannot now. It is frozen in place. Am I looking at a new transmission?? Is it worth it, or just buy a new washer??

Get the transmission out and take a look at the brake cam actuator. It might be broken and not releasing the brake, part # 285785

I don't think it's the brakes--here's why...I got the agitator off, and while trying to break loose the big spanner nut (I don't have a spanner wrench) I grabbed the nut with a channel lock pliers and was able to spin the tub. I hear something dragging a bit, but I was able to spin it. I still can't get the shaft to spin. On my neighbors Whirlpool, I can grab the agitator (bottom 1/2) and spin it by hand. Mine is froze in place. Sounds like a trashed transmission, right?

That is going to depend on were the transmission happen to stop at.

To test the transmission I would remove it and then try turning it by hand were the motor coupler connects to the transmission.

With the plastic part of the coupler still on the transmission you should be able to turn it one way and the long shaft will agitate back and forth.

Turn it the other direction and the clutch that is mounted to the top of the transmission will spin in one direction.

Or get the tranny out and connect it to the motor and run the thing with the the tranny and motor out of the washer. Then you will know for sure. We have another guy here with a similar problem and his main drive gear and pinion turned out to be the problem. Here is his home video showing the problem (stripped main drive gear)
