Check this gear for worn smooth outer edge It is plastic. If you have to get a new one the small companion gear comes with it and is easily replaced. you will need snap ring pliers to remove the keeper that holds down the main gear and do not mess with anything other than the spin pawl. If it need oil in the tranny use 90 weight gear oil.

Thanks for all the help. I was finally able to pry the cover open on the gearcase and it seems like the plastic gear does have some smooth worn spots on it. As you can see the gear does not engage sometimes when I turn it by hand in the following video:



Follow the link for photos of the worn gear as well as the gear removed exposing the spin pawl which looks okay to me.

Can you point me to the correct replacement gear for my washer model? Also do you think I should dump this oil and replace it with fresh 90 weight gear oil? Thanks again.

There you go that is the solution Replace that gear and pinion. You get 2 parts. Let me find you a deal on it (FSP part number 285362) $63 bucks pretty sweet, my brother paid more for his with my discount.

Thanks again. So do you think I should replace the oil in the gearcase or I can use the existing oil? Or will I have to discard the old oil in order to install the new gear? If so how much oil do I put in the gearcase?

Just leave the oil alone it is ok.

I am happy to report that washer is now up and running. Evidently the plastic gear inside the transmission was indeed the problem. The grooves were worn down on several areas of the plastic gear which prevented it from engaging and spinning the basket. I replaced it with the new part and it works like a charm.

Except the basket seems to be banging intermittently against the side and it also makes a loud thud right at the end of the spin cycle. Otherwise, it works fine. I did my first load to test it and it was OK except for the thud previously mentioned 

Any ideas?

Check your springs. make sure the plate is in line with the base.
