Ice Maker Not Automatically Making Ice...
« on: January 02, 2011, 03:09:04 PM »
Frigidaire FRT21TNCW5 refrigerator - I too am having "no ice" issues... I replaced the inlet valve a couple of months ago...worked good (cubes were sometimes hollow), though.  Now the inlet going into the back of the frig was frozen.  I thawed it.  Checked the screen.  And still no water flow into the ice maker!  I ohmed out the inlet valve... checked good.  I just ohmed the 'leveling switch'.  It also checked good.

I split your reply into it's own topic as you should have started a new topic for your problem instead of replying to a old post as you did.

What is the brand and model number of your refrigerator?
Hope you find our site helpful.

My bad... "damn Newbee"....   I was pleasantly surprised to see there was ice made in the ice hopper a little while after I'd reformed the maintenance on it. "It" being a Frigidaire Model FRT21TNCW5.

Thanks for posting the model number.
What type of maintenance did you do to get it working again?

Basically, just removed the ice blockage.  Since I wasn't sure if that was going to fix it, I tested the various components (ohmed).  They all checked good.  Still not exactly sure what causes 'hollow cubes'.  On the water solenoid valve itself, it looks like there are several positions you can use.  I didn't change the position, but I did make an adjustment at the ice maker ( + / - ) with a couple of turns to the positive side.  Guess it's now a wait & see what the "cubes" look like.
Thank you for your time, sir.
I'll post again if there is a need.

Low water pressure to the ice maker will cause hollow cubes.

Make sure that the valve that feeds the water supply is installed properly.  Make sure there is not a pierce valve, installed upside down on the cold water pipe.  That is incorrect, and sediment from your pipes will block the pin hole, causing low water pressure to the machine.

I always change out pierce valves with this...

A 1/2 or 3/4 (depending on the home water supply size) Sharkbite T,  Then a short piece of 1/2 coper to a 1/2 x 1/4 comp sharkbite shut off.  There is no way this set up will ever clog with sediment, and it is extremely fast to install.

Now THAT sounds like what was happening.  I do have the pierce valve installed (as of right now), but I will defiantly install the Sharkbite T fitting.  Will Lowes carry this item?  Or will I need to visit a "plumbing supply store?"

Home depot carries the sharkbite brand,  lowes has gator grip or something like that, they are the same exact thing.  The 1/2 - 1/4 comp shut off may be hard to find at either of those places,  I order mine online.. I know they sell a 1/2 - 3/8 shut-off, and you can buy a 3/8-1/4 reducer to screw on the end to adapt to tie into the water line.  Or you can buy a 1/2 -1/4 shut off that you sweat in.  I prefer the least amount of connections, and the least amount of time, thats why i use theses fittings.  They do cost alittle more, but my time is more valuable.

Okay.. a follow up.. We had a water main break up the street and the water was shut off for a period of time.  So I took the opportunity to install the 'T' fitting/shutoff valve.  Went real smooth.  So, the next day the ice catch had a layer of ice in the bottom.  It seams like there is too much water going into the ice maker.(dripping).
Not sure what to do now... maybe check the screen???  Should I remove the shutoff valve???

No, leave the shut off on... Thats not your problem now... In the middle of this post I did read that you adjusted the +/- fill time... maybe by backing that back down to where it was , or lower may solve your issue.  Try that before anything else.
