not sure how to get the washer to work

ok, we got a maytag a608 from a member of our church.  they said they tested it out yesterday and it worked fine...  Got the water hoses in (have them off at the moment, but did turn them on) unit is plugged into a working plug.  not sure how to get the thing to start washing... I tried turning the knob, and pushing it in, and tugged lightly on it to see if it needed to be pulled out. anyone know anything I could try?  I have a LOT of clothes that I need tp get washed and unless I can get this working I'll have to go back to the bath tub to wash... and things just don't get very clean that way

never mind...I'm blond... just didn't pull the knob out enough
9was afraid I'd pull too hard.... my husband asked if I had pulled the knob out all the way I checked it and sure enough I hadn't

You must be a natural blonde.
Bleached blondes don't have that problem.
