Whirlpool Duet Washer giving error code F/05
« on: December 11, 2010, 12:42:17 PM »
Hi Everyone,

Hoping for some advice. My Whirlpool Duet Washing Machine Model Number GHW9150PW has started giving Error F/05 a couple minutes into the Wash Cycle. I replaced the Water Temperature Sensor but I am still getting the error. I have been told that this model doesn't have a Heating element. Any Advice??

Thanks,
Jayson

Aha the old negative temperature coefficient woe. Your water temp don't suit the control. Might be due to a bad heating element. (anormal = infini)and such. You can see the element in photos. It is logically in the lower portion of the tub behind the clean out. Do we have a pic? In this pic (click on it to enlarge) just to the left of the right shock absorber is that puppy. That is the gold looking thang. with the reddish wires attached

In this case they mean the temperature thermister in the water inlet line. It is not sensing the proper temps any longer, or the main CCU board is not registering the input. The tech sheet inside the lower panel tells you the OHM values of the thermister so you can rule it out or replace it. Simple approach if you do it  by the book. The material isalready there...do you have a multimeter?

I do not have a Multimeter. I thought this model didn't come with a heating element but I will look when I get home.  If I find it, is there a way to test it or do I just replace it?

Thanks for the help!

F-5 Water temp sensor failure
If during the water heating step in the wash cycle, the water
temperature sensor (NTC) value is out of range, the F/05 error code
will be displayed. Possible cause/proceedure:
1. Unplug washer or disconnect power.
2. Check the water temperature sensor.
Check connections to the water temperature sensor.
3. Check resistance of heating element, if present on this
model. (abnormal = infinity)

Your model posted I checked 3 diff models and no heater, heater thermister, or inlet thermister is listed so how could their be an F-5 error? This I would love to know.

If your water valve looks like this one then it does have a thermistor but I didn't see that on the one listed in the parts for yours. Click pic to enlarge

I am attaching pictures. I do not have a heater.  But I believe that this little thing is the Thermister which i just replaced since it was only $9.00, but the error persists.

Thanks!

Yeah number 24 Click here for price

After unplugging the machine and replacing the part did you replace the panels before firing that puppy up?

You can buy a multimeter for 9 bucks, That is the only way you are going to determine if your water valve is bad, or your control board is bad.  If u already changed the thermistor down below, an are still getting the code, most likely its not the thermistor.  You can test this machine fully with the bottom panel off.

1. Get a multi meter
2. Set meter to Ohms
3. Remove the tech sheet from bottom right corner of the inside of the machine
4. Look for the value of the thermal discs in the water valve on the tech sheet
5. Place your meter leads onto the thermal discs on the water valve, after disconnecting the wires.
6. If they read close to the values specified on the tech sheet, your control board or wiring is bad
7.  If they are way off the values from the tech sheet, the water valve is bad.

OK, thanks guys!

I will get a Multimeter and test it.  If the Wiring or control board is bad, is that something I can fix or does this mean a trip to the landfill?

It could be a broken wire that is going to that thermistor. You need to run that down with the ohm meter. No need in tossing that machine.

OK, I tested the water temperature sensor and it seems that it is reading correctly.  The Tech sheet gives different readings at Different temperatures, and I tested that as best I could and it seems to be working. How do I test the wire or the control board?  Is it time to call someone and pay to have this looked at?

Thanks again for all of your feedback. I really appreciate it.

Is the water heater at your house turned up wide open?
Is your hot water hose faucet turned wide open?

Buy the CCU and replace it yourself. There is no need to waste money on someone else doing this for you. The control merely plugs in wire for wire. You have  eliminated the sensor from the list of issues so this leaves but one main option according to Whirlpool, part # 8182695
