Atlantis SOMETIMES needs a thump to get going

Maytag Atlantis washing machine SOMETIMES needs a thump to get going after filling up.

this question concerns a Maytag Atlantis washing machine, about 10 years old.
it has given excellent service so far ...  but every once in a while (once in a great while -- NOT every time)  the following occurs:  it fills up with water when started .... and then just sits there, doing nothing, 5, 10, 15 minutes, indefinitely .... .
if i give the machine a light thump on the lid -- or anywhere else --- it starts up and runs quite fine all the way thru.
what part might be responsible here, so that when this therapy of mine no longer works (hopefully sometime in the very remote future) i will know what to go looking for?

 It sounds like a Lid Switch problem. Raise the top cover of the washer by depressing the spring clips with a stiff putty knife or similar tool and lift. The clips are about 3 inches in from both sides.
