Whirlpool/Kenmore dishwasher doesn't pump

I have a Kenmore dishwasher that stopped pumping water. When you start a cycle, you can hear the tub fill with water, then nothing. No pumping or water out of the sprayers. I've got the tub torn down until I can see the chopper, but can't figure out how to get to the pump to test it. The drain cycle works fine if you hit cancel.

Any ideas?

Try to turn the pump by hand from the chopper. If you can't, the pump motor is locked up. Replace the assembly.

The pump does turn by hand.  How can I get to it to test and/or replace?

Sounds like a timer contact problem to me.
The same pump and motor washes and discharges.
It gets power to discharge,but not pump.
That is a timer or wire issue.

How do I replace the timer?  Is that the same as replacing the whole board on the front of the machine?

I looked up your model number and this dishwasher does not have a mechanical timer with contacts.

The same pump and motor washes and discharges.

The diagram I looked at for this model shows a separate drain pump.

The way I would test it is with a volt meter. During the wash cycle I would check to see if I had voltage to the main motor. If I had voltage and the motor did not run then I would replace the motor.

If you do not have voltage to the motor you would need to trace it back with your meter to see why, but chances are if you had no power to the motor the control board would be at fault.

Thanks AJ.  Can you link me the manual to the dishwasher?  I think I have to service the motor from underneath, which would make testing a pain.........

You won't find a service manual for that exact sears model dishwasher, but I believe this whirlpool service manual has the same pump/motor assembly.

When I looked up your mode number I noticed the part number for the motor was, # 8534942.

This is a very common part that I use often.

Well I started doing some tests and everything checked out.  I decided to put it all back together and check the pump, and it works!  I didn't do anything I can think of to make it work out of the blue like that, let just hope it lasts.
