Frigidaire Washer Dryer Timer??

Yesterday after a slight burning smell, Frigidaire washer would not turn on for about an hour. Then when I turned the knob as if to start a new wash, it would not fill. When turned the knob to pre wash it started filling but only with the cover closed. If I turn the knob to fill it to rinse, the water starts filling(only with cover closed) and the machine starts agitating at the same time. Does this sound like it needs a new timer? If so, is this something that can be repaired by an electrically handy son inlaw?
