Maytag Performa no longer performas

My wifes washer no longer works in the agitate cycle. It makes an awful noise but does not move however it does work fine in spin cycle. I looked through some other posts on this sight and thought it might be the dogs so I took apart the agitator assembly.    

First thing I noticed was that the top of the agitator was full of gray grease, is this normal? Seems strange because that area is not sealed off from water. I couldnt get the clutch/dog assembly out of the top agitator but it did seem to be working. Does this mean my transmission is bad??

Ouch I just saw how much a new transmission was...nearly$300!!! Guess Ill be looking for a good used machine.
