Maytag top loading washing machine shuts off prematurely

On an inconsistent basis, this machine stops during the rinse or spin cycle. Opening and closing the door starts it on its way again but just for a few seconds, then it shuts off again, and we repeat the process until the cycle completes. Is this an easy fix or is it time for a newer washer? I can do simple repairs but am not prepared to get into too much.

Sounds like it is off-balance. Make sure the machine is close to level, but sturdy. Lock the legs.

Opening and closing the lid will reset the lid switch mechanism but won't solve the problem . You must reach into the washer and reposition the clothes equally around the wash tub .Make sure you are washing with an adequate water level according to load size and mix it up when it comes to articles washed ..i.e not all towels etc . If you still have issues you may need damper pads ,this will cost you about $15.00 few bucks..but the labour might bite you.

You will have to open the top and hold it to the rear with the machine in the spin cycle to observe the tub/balance switch contact.
 The switch mechanism will be out of the way.
These machines do not have to move the tub violently to trip the lid switch mechanism.

Fortunately, the lid switch is adjustable. Loosen the single screw and move the whole switch assy back or forward until the  lid switch clicks properly when it is about 1" from being shut.

Other than that, the linkage  from the lid actuator is likely  out of whack or the spring is stretched out. Replacing the actuator assembly should solve it.
