Kenmore 80 series washer stopped working
« on: September 26, 2010, 01:38:39 PM »
Our Kenmore 80 series (110.20842990) stopped working today at the end of the rinse cycle, leaving the tub full of water (and wet towels). The timer makes a clicking/humming noise, but no matter where we have it set (wash, rinse, spin), the washer will not drain or agitate. If I change the water level from medium to large, it does fill with more water. When it is on the spin cycle, the timer will not make the clicking noise until the lid is lowered.

So does it sound like the timer, lid switch, a sock in the pump, or the coupler???

Thanks in advance!

Open the control console and use your electric meter to verify continuity at the lid switch, part # 3949238

Tried bypassing the lid switch, but no luck. Sounds like a loud egg timer.

I took the pump off, but I can't see anything in there. I can turn the wheel by sticking my finger in there, but it feels pretty stiff.

How freely should it turn?

I also pulled the motor off and looked at the coupling, but I can't tell if there is anything wrong with it or not. I didn't take off all three parts, but the two parts I can see don't appear to be broken (they do look a bit worn though; the holes on the middle piece look kind of bored out).

What am I supposed to look for to tell if the coupling is bad or not?

Thanks again!

After checking out those pics, I think I should go ahead and replace the coupler. I can only see two of the three parts right now, but the middle rubber piece looks pretty worn like the one in the pic. Also, I was able to turn the coupler easily (clockwise) only up to a certain point and then I couldn't move it any more.

I'm wondering if I should just replace the pump as well. The wheel inside the pump felt stiff although I can turn it with my finger. How freely should the pump spin?

Replace it. Sand gets in there. The newer models pump out the water first. The timer sequence is too damn long in areas where sandy loam is prevalent. This causes too dang much fiction. All that friction causes the pump to overheat. Can get so bad the pump bearing literally melts.

I replaced the motor coupler and pump and felt optimistic, but when I tried to wash a load, it just filled up with water and then stopped. The noise seems to be coming from the timer.

What do I look for with the brake cam actuator? Should I be considering replacing the timer next?

The lid switch has a green ground wire and 2 hot wires. Jump them 2 hot wires and see if she will spin.

I tried that already. It never even made it to the spin cycle. It stopped as soon as the tub filled with water.

Instead of repairing this timer, get another used Whirlpool or Kenmore and save this one for parts...for the same price?

Here's a video I made so you can hear the sound it makes:

I'm starting to think about just replacing it before I invest any more money into it. Any recommendations as far as a brand/model?
