Maytag Atlantis--Spin, but no agitate.

Hello all.

My Maytag Atlantis washer suddenly will not agitate. The motor runs, the belt turns, but the transmission does not turn. When it's in spin cycle, it runs normally.

I don't know if this is helpful or not, but I removed the belt, and can turn the pulley counterclockwise (viewed from the bottom). Once the clutch (or brake, or whatever...) engages, the transmission spins. If I turn the pulley clockwise, the transmission does not spin.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

None that I can think of? Seen alot of them do this. They sometimes make a loud growling sound when they go out.

That's the weirdness, washaman. It sounds normal. The runs both directions, and it spins as good as ever. Maybe I'm just in denial. I would like to have one of the nice new front loaders, but just not RIGHT NOW.

I did notice there is a bit of an oil leak on the bottom...

If I decide to replace the transmission, is there anything else that I will likely need? Does it come with the seal kit?

Does not come with a seal kit. You will need a spanner wrench for the tub nut, and a brake removal tool which is an additional $120 ballpark in tools.

This is just getting better all the time! So, around $250 for the tranny, another Franklin or so for the seal kit (I'm assuming that it's pretty much a must to replace that at the same time), and tools.

Correct. I would check your local Craigslist.org first. You can find a good washer on there for around $100. If you find a similiar Maytag, you can always swap the tubs into your old one so you can keep the same machine. It's pretty easy to do. Most newer ones are interchangeable.

Just an FYI:  Maytag Atlantis and Preforma (Herrin Platform) replacement transmissions do come with the seal kits.  The Maytag Legacy washers  (SAV + Amanas) do not.

You will need more then just the brake tool.
You will also need a special spring removal tool, The classic Maytag spanner wrench, and the new style Maytag spanner wrench.

And sometimes some words that your mother will not be proud of

I would possibly go to a local appliance shop first that deals with maytag, and ask if you can borrow the tools, be prepared to hear them say no, but I would let you use mine if you gave me enough of a deposit to cover them if you didn't return them.  That could save you a bunch of money for some tools you will only use 1 time.

Forgot about the spring removal tool. I alway use my pair of vice grips.
