Whilrpool Washer wont spin but will agitate and drain
« on: September 15, 2010, 10:23:49 AM »
Looks like the model number has been painted over. But I do know the washer is 8 yrs old.
The problem im having is the washer wont spin. The washer agitates and the pump drains the water. I can hear the motor running but it wont spin? Clutch? Lid switch is good because the pump is working.
Thanks Guys

That's broken drive coupling:

If it does agitate it's probably a clutch or transmission issue. Is the bottom of the transmission cover in oil?

I would check the coupling first but yeah it might be them thangs but it does not take near as much effort to wash as to spin and if the coupling is stripped it won't spin. Seen it.

Last weekend I had a call for a Whirlpool that would agitate very slow and would not spin. Replace the transmission and still would spin. Ended up being part of the coupler was rounded off just enough for it to grab for agitate, not for spin. So yeah JW I agree to check the simple/cheap stuff first. O0

Hi guys thanks for the quick reply.
Ok I got the motor off and the coupler looks great no tears and the rubber part is nice and tight. I watched the video on the clutch but it seemed to cut short. I have the motor dirve shat out. For the clutch i removed the clip and the round part that sits on the clip. And im trying to pull the clutch up and off the shaft but it only moves a few inches. Do I have to really yank on it or is there something else holding it on. Oh yeah now that im at the clutch how can it tell if its bad? The transmission is not covered in oil. And I was playing with the brake and it seems to be ok, but what do I know.. Thanks

After you have the transmission removed, use pliers to compress the spring holding the clutch in place.

Great I have the clutch taken off. Is there a way to tell if the clutch is the problem?
Im trying to make sure before I head to the parts store

Grab the spring, while holding the out side of the clutch with your other hand.  If you can easily move the inside of the clutch, while holding the outside, its no good.  I like to roughen up the inside of the outer piece of the clutch with a dremel tool.  Doing that ensures a strong surface for the clutch to grab.

Put the clutch back together on the transmission. Mount the transmission back to the machine. And anything else you've taken put back on the machine except for the cabinet. Then take a jumper wire and jump out the lid switch on the machine not the cabinet. In order to jump out the lid switch you will need a 5" wire thats stripped on both ends and run it to the two outside parts of the harness, the middle hole is just a ground. Plug the machine back in with the lid switch jumped ans start the machine with it in the spin cycle. If the tub is not spinning then push the timer back in and stop it. Take a flat head scew driver, put it in between the transmission and the clutch and pry up on the clutch lifting it. Pull the timer back out with it in spin cycle. And if it spins for a few seconds then stops, then you have a bad clutch.
