Picking the right washing machine
« on: March 17, 2008, 06:44:33 AM »
With all the choices of washing machines for sale nowadays, it can be difficult to choose the one that will best suit your needs. There are lots of nice new features, such as steam, which have been added as enhancements on high-end washers. People are also dazzled by the array of colors that machines are wearing and are distracted from other factors which will affect their budget later.

A small family (2-4 persons) will do just fine with most top-load washers. For the most part, they are designed to do 2 normal loads a day every day to achieve their life-span ratings. By the way, have you looked at the average life-span for appliances nowadays?

A larger family should really consider going with a front load machine only. This is because most of them will hold about 4 cu/ft of clothes, unlike the top-loaders which hold about 2.4. The argument that a front loader is more expensive does not "hold water' when it comes to repair costs later on. This is exemplified by one visitors post that he has already replaced 3 transmissions on his top load machine (family of 7). Now let's do the math...
1 front load machine- $1000
1 top load machine- $500 (with 3 transmission repairs @ $600+)= $1100

Another thing to consider is that front load machines have absolutely no transmission!

I'm not suggesting that there is a proper machine for every situation, but if you have a lot of wash during the week, the front loader may well save you money down the road even though they cost more initially. Besides, you will save 50% more water with a front loader. Beats buying a cheap top loader and fixing it every year.
