Whirlpool Washer: All direct drive models

Customer complaint: The washer is making a noise when it should be agitating or spinning, but it does not wash or spin the cloths. There is also water sitting in the tub.

Solution to the problem: Replace the motor coupling

The motor coupler connects the washers main motor to the gear box. There is no belt on a direct drive washing machine.

Sometimes the washer will make a lot of noise if the coupler is broken and the washer is trying to agitate or spin. Other times it does not make much noise at all and the only thing you will hear is the motor running. It all just depends on if parts of the broken motor coupler are hitting each other when the washer is running or if all the pieces of the broken motor coupler have fallen to the floor under the washer.

The washer will still be able to pump the water out. A lot of the times the customer will say it's full of water and does not pump out, but it does. They just don't give the washer time to pump the water out before they shut the washer off because of the funny noise it is making.

The washer will drain the water out even if the motor coupler is broken.

This is a very simple and cheap repair if you do it yourself.

Wow, you sure made that look easy!

I ordered my motor coupler and after watching the video I feel that I will have no trouble getting it put on.

Thanks for taking the time to post the video!

I will let you know how it goes after I get the part.

Great video! :)

btw: before finding your video I did not even know that the washer cabinet came off like that.
I was going to try and take the back off, lol...

Then I tipped the washer back and seen old pieces of the motor coupler on the floor.
So I knew it was busted. :)

I will take it apart after I get the new motor coupler so I can put it back together the same day.

I must have watched the video a dozen times now. :)

Thanks again...

A movie star...  ;D

Yeah, I could go for that, lol..

The first couple videos I tried to do some voice. The mic on the camera would not pick up my voice that great during the taping, so I just shut up, lol...

I got some ideas I am working on though and maybe as time goes on I will get better at making the videos.

It would maybe help to have some better audio/video equipment too, but it's not really in the budget at this time. :)

This video clip is so cool! Me and my friend spent more than one hour try to take the back panel out. I wish I had watch this video clip earlier!

Thanks very much.

Here is a video I found that shows you what a washer can sound like if it has a bad coupler.

This is what they sound like if the coupler is cracked in the middle.
If the coupler has fallen all the way off it won't make as much noise as this one does.

I replaced the coupler... The first load I ran it squeeked really loud when it agitated at first and we got a burning rubber smell.  By the time it got to the spin cycle it had stopped squeeking.  I have run two more loads and the squeek and smell seem to have stopped.  Should I worry about the smell?  Thanks :)

The video is no longer available but the PDF document was of a great help.

Would be useful if you load a new video.

I will buy the coupler and change it.

Thanks,

I have a similar problem wirth a Kenmore 110 series top load washer. The pdf is corrupt and the video link no longer works.

Any chance somebody can repost the video and/or repair pdf. I would much appreciate it.
