It will not spin. I have started a wash cycle with nothing in the tub and it will go through all the timer steps including spin cycle then it stops. Once in the spin cycle it continues running, but it will not spin. I believe I smell something rubber getting hot. I have mechanical skills. Where should I start?

The coupling would be the first thing to check for. The coupling is between the gearbox and the motor, it is what turns the gearbox and will commonly break. But note that if the coupling is bad it will not wash either so if it will agitate you know the coupling is ok. There is also a chance the clutch is the problem if the clutch is bad the tub will typically spin slowly.
