Maytag Atlantis dyer and an awful squeaking
« on: August 17, 2010, 02:14:46 PM »
Hi, all.

This looks like a great place for appliance help. I hope you all might have some suggestions for me.

First off, I know this model number is for a gas dryer, but ours is most definitely the electric version. I'm not sure why that model number is included on ours.

Anyhow, here's the problem. About ten minutes into running, the dryer makes a very loud squeaking, which can be heard upstairs (the dryer is in the basement) and in the back yard. The squeaking isn't constant, but it will last for 10-15 minutes intervals and is more shrill than, say, the noise your car makes when the brake pads are low.

I suspect this is probably the belt, tensioner pulley, rollers, or the rear bearing. Any clue as to what I should get in my attempt to repair this?

Thanks for any help you might provide.

It probably is the roller closest to the heating exhaust pipe. This is a slope head.
The door comes off first then the goalpost shaped front panel comes off then the front shroud. Then you can remove the drum. Your service manual

Wow. Thanks for the incredibly fast reply. I'm guessing I need part # 12001541
Should I get more than one when I order, and is there anything else you might recommend I pick up?

That is the correct roller for your dryer. There are two of them in there and I would replace them both at the same time. Most of the time you can take the dryer apart and spin the rollers by hand and tell what one is giving you the trouble, but chances are it is the one above the heater anyway.

Replacing both rollers at the same time is not only good maintenance, but it also prevents call backs. :)

Awesome. Thanks so much.

Is there any chance it could be a bearing causing this? Is that something I should order just in case?

The drum rides on glides in the front shroud and rollers attached to the rear bulkhead. Either the front glides are making the noise or the rollers. I suspect the roller nearest the heat source is squealing due to the heat.

JW is correct.

There is no "bearing" other then the two rollers and the front drum pads.

Here are the pads that the front of the drum ride on, part # 306508
There are two of them in your dryer.
