but I think after considerable testing that the red and yellow wires are backwards.  According to my wiring diagram


the red wire should drive the spin solenoid and the yellow wire should drive the agitate solenoid.  And if I'm not mistaken the spin solenoid is on the left (when viewed from the rear) and the agitate solenoid is on the right (when viewed from the rear).  Since your picture is also a rear view, the red wire should be on the left and the yellow wire should be on the right.  Isn't that so?  If not, please tell me where I went wrong.

You would know if you had it backwards. 2 of them wires is white. That is common.
A white wire should be on each solenoid. The other 2 wires come from the timer. If you had them other 2 wires backwards it would spin in wash mode and wash in spin mode. It would not hurt anything in the timer. This was a way techs used to see if the timer was bad. You swapped those 2 wires and if it would spin out or wash when it wouldn't before then you knew you had a bad timer. This machine is a wonderful one. The motor turns in one direction only. The wash and spin modes are accomplished by those solenoids. The item pictured is called a wigwag. It is mounted on the transmission and constantly moves to and fro. When the timer needs to spin it simply energizes a coil and this shifts the gears into the spin mode using shift levers. Most of the time the shift pins get rusty inside the coils and when the coils get energized the pins don't move. All you need to do is remove the shift pins and sand them down. That will get her a goin' again. No parts needed.
