I am guessing that the refill contains the product with the propane.

The blue mat that you slip under the grill of the unit contains the repellent.

How it works

Quote
ThermaCELL uses revolutionary, patented technology to dispense a small amount of repellent into the air over a long period of time. ThermaCELL is powered by a butane cartridge which provides the cordless, portable heat necessary to operate the device (batteries are not needed). It directs the heat to a metal grill. A mat saturated with Allethrin, a copy of a naturally occurring insecticide found in chrysanthemum flowers, is placed on top of the metal grill. The heat generated by the butane cartridge vaporizes the repellent allowing it to rise into the air, creating a 15 x 15 ft (225 sq ft) “Mosquito-Free-Zone” in minutes. The repellent is very unpleasant to mosquitoes, but when used as directed, will not harm humans or pets.

I decided to give one a try too. I picked one up today at walmart and used it tonight for the first time.

It worked great!

Thanks for posting about these AJ!

Today my son and I spend a couple bug free hours out at the riffle range thanks to the ThermaCell Mosquito Repellent Appliance.

All the other days we have gone out there this summer we have had to put up with flies biting at our legs when sitting at the benches they have out there.

Today the first thing I did was start up the repellent appliance and set it under the bench. After that we went out and set up some targets.

We could see the black flies around the garbage can and the bench next to ours, but none on or under our bench.

I'm so happy with the way this thing has worked in the few times we have tried it so far that I went back to walmart and purchased three more of them today.

Hope you find our website helpful.

I have used the ThermaCell Repellent Appliances for years and love them.

I don't have the compact unit, but have been thinking of purchasing one.

From what I have read on there website about the compact model it seems to have a switch to start it, but to turn it off you have to unscrew the fuel cartridge.

Welcome to the forum deepwoods,  O0

The compact model is on it's way and I should have it in a few days. Once I get it I will post some photos of it next to the other full size ThermaCell appliance so everyone can see the difference in size.

Hope you find our website helpful.

Here are some images of the ThermaCell Compact. It is much smaller then there other units and I can fit it in my back pocket.
