Whirlpool washer 'sings' in spin cyle.
« on: July 03, 2010, 08:52:37 PM »
I'm working on a Whirpool washer model #LSR7233BW2.  It makes a high pitched 'singing' noise in the hi-spin cycle.  I've been advised that it could be worn bearings in the tub support.  No info that I can find covers this repair.  Especially how to get the old bearings out, put new ones in, and what tools are needed.  I fix and sell machines so it would be good for me to know how to do this repair.  Any advise would be appreciated.

Yes, there's a nice bearing and seal kit and it comes with good instructions. The kit is shown below and contains all the upper and lower bearings and all the seals. Personally, before I did that, I would drop the gearcase and then drop the basket drive. See what kind of wear was done to the  shiny surface of the basket drive due to the bearing issue. You may need to add a basket drive to your grocery list  so the repair will work properly. Kind of like a worn brake rotor...it can only take so much scoring...

Check the simple things first. Make sure there is not something in the water pump making the noise or even something between the tubs.

Thanks for the advice.  That bearing kit is on the way.  Any pointers on how to get the old bearings/seals out and the new ones in?

There is only one way to  remove and install them. As with any major repair there are usually specialized tools to make the job go quickly and correctly. However, it seems there are a lot of "enterprising" individuals who feel they can fix anything with what they already own. So, unless you are McGyver, you will need this special tool shown below to accomplish the bearing and seal overhaul. As far as tips, the instructions are inside the kit link I showed you above. I am not able to find one of those tools online, but the part number for it is below if you want to give it a go.

Did you drop the spin tube as I suggested before ordering the bearings? How about the pump and the tub as AJ suggested? You may be in for trouble if not. I was basing my advice on what you were told to begin with.
