Install an Ice Maker in a Non Prepped Frig/Freezer
« on: June 07, 2010, 09:49:09 PM »
Is it possible to install an Ice Maker into a Refrigerator/Freezer that is not already prepped
I would like to jury rig an Ice Maker into a smaller frig/freezer but was wondering if the frig controls the Ice Maker in any way.
(I'm aware I would have to get power and a water supply into the freezer area.)

Any one have any Ideas?

*** Refrigerator
Magic Chef 4.0 Cu. Ft. Compact Two Door Refrigerator - Silver - MCBR415S at The Home Depot

*** Ice Maker (or one like it)
Magic Chef - Icemaker for Maytag C Series Refrigerators - IC11B

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Does anyone KNOW if the Refrigerator system board does anything when it comes to the Ice Maker?

or

Does the Refrigerator only provides a housing and Power for the Ice Maker?

The ice maker calls for water,harvests ice,all by it's lonesome. No controls needed. The ice maker mold thermostat starts the cycle and near the end the water gets added. All by the ice maker. The IM simply needs power, a water valve, and 25F in the freezer section.

So its possible!?

Drill a hole in the Side or rear to run a water line into the freezer, missing all major components and Caulk

do the same for the power.

Do you have any suggestions or warnings?

Is the Power for the Ice Maker 110V? What would you suggest for Grounding?

The ice maker is 110,yes you need a ground and one is in the IM harness.
 You have 4 wires there.
Green, brown, white, black.
Green= ground,
brown= water,
white= neutral,
black= L1

It would probably be best to get the wire harness that would normally come with the refrigerator.  Run that harness into the Freezer and down to the water solenoid.
The only rough connection, would be to connect the power cord to the harness outside the freezer

Would there need to be a breaker in the power cord or could it be ran directly to the wall outlet?

The IM has a built in fuse. No extras needed.

The Reason for doing this....

Im need a small Refrigerator / Freezer like this one from Home Depot

http://www.homedepot.com/Appliances-Refrigerators-Freezers-Compact-Refrigerators/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xgeZaql8/R-100245583/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

But none this size and this price range has an Ice maker.
We live in a 44' Toy Hauler RV.  We want to put an additional Refrigerator / Freezer in the Garage of the RV
and would like to have an Ice Maker for the summer months (gets HOT in Florida)

We bought a portable Ice Maker from Target, It works Great!  But the Ice melts as it doesn't have a Freezer built in to save the Ice.
http://www.target.com/Emerson-Portable-Ice-Maker/dp/B0014DZ2YG/ref=sc_qi_detailbutton

So theres the reason for my madness  8) :D O0 :o
