Kenmore series 70 washer spin

My washer won't spin at all. it will do everything else but spin. I do have it taking apart and the coupling is fine. I did noticed with the pump running out of the washer and connected to the gear case the pole sticking out of it spins but it you put pressure on it it will stop. it turns slow with no pressure on it. would I need the whole gear case to fix my problem, maybe gears are worn?

Get the clutch off and remove the tranny cover. Look for a worn main drive gear. Then remove the main drive gear and look at the spin pawl. The spin pawl has to catch a boss under that main drive gear in order to make the tranny spin. With wear the spin pawl gets smashed down and won't CATCH one of them bosses. Their are 3 bosses. Here is how it works during the wash cycle the spin pawl is moved to the inside and held into place by the spin pawl keeper. When the wash cycle ends the motor reverses and takes off pumping out the water. after 5 minutes of water pumping the timer stops for one minute. The stopping force releases and propels the spin pawl away from the middle where is is allowed to catch one of 3 bosses underneath the main drive gear. You can make it do it anytime by stopping the timer while in spin and starting it again after a slight pause. This transmission in the direct drive world is know as a Neutral drain type tranny. Original models did not have a neutral drain tranny, they spun and drained at the same time. It is a very easy fix. Use this nice guide provided by fearless leader: WHIRLPOOL D.D. TRAINING MANUAL

Does the motor run or try to run during the spin cycle?

If the motor does not run or does not try to run during the spin you may have a bad lid switch.

Remove the pump and see what is stuck inside the pump.

I see this all the time and JW is right on the money. Also the basket drive could be causing excessive drag if worn out. Was the bottom of the tranny covered in oil when removed?
