You need to find where the noise is comming from.

I just had a noise stop my Maytag and I thought it was from the electric motor.  Turns out the water pump was the noise maker.  There was a piece of metal moving out from the bearing and starting to touch the rotating piece above it.

You can download the service manual from the "Manuals" section of this web site.  It tells you how to open the front so you can pinpoint the noise.

well the manual helped get the lid off which let me get the front cover off!!  I started up the cycle and noticed the water level switch was set to mini load...i changed it to normal and no more noise>> could this have been my problem..if so i feel retarded but relieved also...

Yes this low water setting would cause some noise. Glad you found the problem. Now if I can get my ice maker going.

ok good and bad news....put it back together..started  a load and the noise was back..now the noise is coming from the tub. i guess thats the right word..is it suppose to be moving while the center piece (agitator) is...it move slightly and when it moves the noise comes on

Your tub is held in place during the agitation cycle by the brake system below. There were issues with the brake rotor and spring on this model early on. Unfortunatley an expensive tool is required to remove the brake assembly on this machine (Maytag part #12002012). You may seek a technician for this one.

so i guess its not a do it yourself job...if i run it like this will i do more damage?? how much should a repair like this run??? maybe its cheaper just to buy another machine..

I wouldn't sweat the noise. It is not going to hurt things to let this go. The transmissions on this machine were quietly reconfigured mid production, so any new parts installed on this machine will be an improvement over the original ones. I also do not recommend buying a new machine necessarily. That's what Maytag is counting on...

some of us call it 'planned obsolescence'.

You can get the service book for the Atlantis from one of us, so there is no reasaon you can't keep this thing around awhile.
