Whirlpool Washer Problems

My washer is only about 7 years old.  Just this last month, it has started having problems.  First, it would stop on occation in the cycle just before pumping out the water and spinning.  The timer seemed to keep spinning, but the washer did not.  I've ordered a timer, but before it could come, the spin has stopped.  It make a ratcheting sound, but doesn't move.  The water pumps out but clothes now stay wet.  Should I just throw in the towel on this unit?  I have a $75 timer coming that I can return.  The transmission looks to cost ~$150.  I also just replaced the dogs.  I also get a loud whining sound in my ear, but that's just my wife.

Your drive coupling is probably broken. This is an easy fix. The drive coupling fits between the motor and the transmission. They break over time. It consists of a rubber center and 2 outer pieces. To get to it the case of this washer must be removed. The controls will rotate upward exposing the S clips that hold the case to the back. They pop off easily using a flat blade screw driver. unplug the lid switch and remove the case. The pump comes off easily as does the motor. All you have to do is line up parts and snap it all back together. Their are videos and pictures on site to show you this procedure.
