Whirlpool dishwasher manual
« on: August 05, 2007, 03:02:41 PM »
Hi first post here.  My dishwasher is leaking from between the drain motor and the pump housing.  I have a drain impeller and seal kit, but I cannot figure out how to remove the pump from the housing without damaging it.  Could you please help, maybe upload the manual.  Thank you for looking in.

I have included the parts diagrams for the pump and motor in the two attachments below.

Still looking for the manual.

How far apart do you have it?

You will have to take the pump and motor assembly out of the tub first to work on it.

Then there is a cover that screws on the front of the pump and screw that holds the motor in place.

If the seal has been leaking and running water up the motor shaft they can be hard to get apart and when you do the shaft on the motor is all rusted up.

Then you will have to replace the pump and motor as a assembly.

Below is the pump and motor assembly for your dishwasher.

What is the part number on the drain impeller and seal kit you got?

Thanks for all of your replies.  The impeller kit I have is 4386996.  I thought that I would be able to only pull out the pump from underneath without removing the dishwasher from the counter and replace the seal.  I guess I was wrong.  Those diagrams you have are like the ones I ordered from.  Please advise me how to get this done, ie dishwasher removal, etc.  I suppose I must disconnect everything and pull the dishwasher out of the counter (disconnect water and electric).

I checked for a factory instruction sheet and there was not one to be found, sorry. :(

Yeah, this one your going to have to remove the dishwasher to work on it.
Shut the water off and disconnect the water, power and the drain hose.
Then open the door and look up under the cabinet. You should see the two screws that hold the dishwasher in place.

Remove them two screws and pull the dishwasher out.

Print the diagram out so you can look at it once you start taking thing apart.
Once you get the dishwasher out and the pump/motor assembly out were you can work on it I think you will see it's not all that hard.

Let me know if you have any more questions as you go and if you have a digital camera feel free to post photo of what your working on.

Members can upload there photos free to our gallery or even as attachments in the post using the "Additional Option" for posting.

Okay, I'll try to post some photos tomorrow.  The Part Number of the kit is  PT9324156 (that consists of 7, 8 and 9 on your diagram that you attached).  This is the Impeller/seal kit, thought this might stop my leak as it was coming from exactly where the motor assy mates with the pump housing. I still hope this does the trick.  I will haul the machine out and start ripping and tearing.

Yep, the first number you gave me (4386996) is the factory part number. I would guess the PT number is a number from the place you ordered it from.

If the motor shaft is ok yet then the kit is all you should need.

Will be looking forward to seeing the photos.

Progress so far...I have removed the dishwasher from the counter, how do you remove the housing cover?  Is that threaded the white circular piece (Disk - mount?) on the front?  I dont want to break the plastic, any ideas how to remove that without breaking it?  Do you have the step by step manual for this machine?  If I had the page for this it would be a godsend.  Anyway, hope you can offer so more advice, I am off to gently try and pry this open.

OK, I unscrewed the disk from the front of the housing, now how to separate the motor from the impeller?  The shaft feels stuck.  I dont want to pull it apart and break the shaft.  Am I missing something?  What is holding that shaft onto the impeller?

Hi thanks for the manual.  I am still having trouble removing the motor.  It feels stuck in the pump somehow.  Do you know how to loosen the shaft?

Everything is back together and running.  I am running a test cycle right now.  So far so good.  Just a couple of observations to pass on.

Disconnecting the water supply line was tough because it was rigid copper pipe and on solid (10 or more years?) with little room to turn the nut.  I opted to remove the water inlet valve from the frame (disconnecting its hose of course first).  That way I didnt have to risk breaking the pipe or the valve.

Removing the impeller disk on the housing be sure to use something that will get into the outer edges to avoid snapping the plastic piece that cross in the middle.  I used an oil filter wrench, the kind with the jaws because it fit into the outer edges so all I had to do was turn to unscrew it.

The motor shaft was rusted and stuck on the impeller, I wiggled and pulled the brass piece off of the impeller first.  Then I used my leatherman saw blade to cut off the plastic around the shaft.

The rest was easy, install the seals and the impeller, then put it all back together.

Thank you for your support.  This web site is an asset for the do-it-yourselfers.

I will report back to let you know if all is well.
