Kenmore Elite Washer Not Spinning at Full Speed
« on: May 10, 2010, 03:44:29 PM »
Wont get up to speed.  Have pulled pump and motor, coupler is fine.  Two issues:  Motor sounds rough, when I had it out, turned by hand and had a dragging noise while turning.

Second there is a small amount of oil spray on the inside of the cabinent.  Could that mean transmission issues?

Why is that?  Is it usually one or the other?  Could the transmission issues have an effect on the motor?  Or is the motor ok and the sounds be the transmission?

The motor replacement is easy.

The transmission I am lost on.  Do I replace the entire thing or does spin issues point a particuar piece of the transmission.

Thank you for your help

You can replace the seal on the cover to stop the oil leak. It is really simple. The clutch can slip from that oil but it is easy to remove the lining and clean it up.

So, I should put in the new motor, put in a new seal and that should solve the spin issue?  Is there a visable way to detect an issue with the transmission once I get the top off of it?

The main drive gear is plastic. it can wear smooth with age. Nothing is hard about repairing anything to do with this washer. It is worth the effort to repair it. Parts are cheap and easy to obtain.

Thank you for the good info.  I am going to start on the tranny.

One question....How do I get the Triple Action Agitator off of the drive shaft?  I have the top off but the auger system is different than just putting a nut driver down on it?

The video is for dual action.  Triple has a clip style retainer that blocks access to the bolt holding the agitator on.  Other than extreme force with plyers....I m not sure how to get the retainer out.

Some of those agitators are held on by a plastic retainer that has a square hole that's about a 3/4" square. You should be able to see it now. Stick something in it and unscrew it. They have a spring under it. Then it should come off.

You use a 1/2 inch drive socket extension to remove it.
Just like it shows in the JW video.
